Patrons of the city who need to use WiFi for 30 minutes or less can now get free Internet access at the Kota Kinabalu City Hall as well as at the Lintasan Deasoka

KOTA KINABALU: Patrons of the city who need to use Wifi for 30 minutes or less can now get free internet access at the Kota Kinabalu City Hall as well as at the Lintasan Deasoka, near here.

Revealing this at the launch of the City Hall Free WiFi here yesterday, Kota Kinabalu Mayor, Datuk Yeo Boon Hai said the free daily Wifi with a speed of 1 Mega Bytes per second access was accessible to everyone.

Users of the free service would only need to register their name and telephone number, he said.

And of course, they would also need to use devices with WiFi capabilities, he added.

Yeo said that the endeavor had been made possible through the joint venture between the DBKK and Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM).

“The aim is to provide a zone with internet access to visitors such as the KK City Hall’s clients, city folks and tourists at Lintasan Deasoka and near the DBKK building,” he said.

The internet access was provided by TM, added Yeo.

He said that subscribers of Unifi and Streamyx would have access to 500MB daily with speed of 4MBPS.

Additionally, premium access can also be purchased at RM30 from any TM Points and selected banks.

With the premium access, clients have 24 hours access to the WiFi service with a speed of 4MBPS.

Yeo said that this was the first stage towards providing Wifi internet access facilities in the city under the TM Smart City programme.

He added that TM had installed a total of 10 access points (APs) at the DBKK building last December, and the cost of the installation was borne by TM.

Todate, TM has already installed more than 900 APs at 200 places in Sabah. TM has already installed 465 APs at 120 areas including Manggatal, Inanam and Kota Kinabalu.

Yeo hoped that more APs would be installed in the city to increase internet access to city folks.

At the same time, Yeo in his speech also emphasised DBKK’s mission to coordinate and enhance development for the benefit of the people.

He added that the event yesterday was in line with the mission and that the launch of DBKK’s free WiFi was a new development for the citizens of the city.

He said that DBKK was ICT aware and was consistent with the development in the field in the provision of its services.

“Since many people now use a lot of online services, DBKK is now providing services using the technology such as e-taxation, e-valuation, and e-kiosk. In the future, we will introduce our elicensing and e-services systems,” he said.

Also present at the event were Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Yong Oui Fah, DBKK director general, Joannes Solidau, TM Sabah general manager, Sukkuriya Masri and others.
