Blacklisted individuals among buyers of cloned cars — RTD

SHAH ALAM: Individuals whose name were blacklisted by banks and financial institutions have been identified to be among buyers of cloned cars.

Selangor Road Transport Department (RTD) director Nazli Md Taib said this was because cloned cars could be purchased in cash as they were cheaper compared to normal cars.

“We have identified these individuals, usually aged 30 and above, whose names have been blacklisted by banks but were tempted to purchase cloned cars as they cannot take loans to purchase normal cars.

“To get a Toyota Vios, for example, they only need to pay RM4,000 compared to the much higher price of a normal car in the market,” he told a press conference yesterday.

He said this trend had also caused the cloned car syndicate to be active in the country.

Nazli said most of the buyers took the risk of buying luxury cloned cars from Singapore and Thailand as they assumed that it was the best way for them to own such cars, even though they knew that it was an offence under the law.

Commenting further, he said between January and today, 164 cloned cars worth over RM2.5 million had been seized in Selangor.

Among the brand of the seized luxury cloned cars were Mini Cooper, Lexus, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Honda and Toyota.
