Jesselton College joined hands with Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) and officially sealed its commitment to help keep the city clean with a gotong royong.
KOTA KINABALU: Jesselton College joined hands with Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) and officially sealed its commitment to help keep the city clean with the initiation of a gotong royong here yesterday.
Kota Kinabalu City Mayor Datuk Yeo Boon Hai said the college was the second to get on board DBKK’s cleanliness mission this year.
“The adoption program is a DBKK City Environmental Health Department’s project, where DBKK invites parties interested to cooperate with DBKK in the cleanliness maintenance aspects of the city area,” said Yeo at the DBKK and Jesselton College Community Service Program launch here yesterday.
“The strategic cooperation between DBKK and Jesselton College involves 100 Jesselton College students with the support of DBKK and stakeholders of the related area.
“For the program today, the adopted area starts from in front of Standard Chartered Bank till the Kampung Air roundabout,” revealed Yeo.
The mayor also called on the city folks to work as a team to assist DBKK in formulating and implementing the city’s cleanliness programs.
“Indeed, the adoption program will provide an opportunity to all parties, whether public, corporate and voluntary organizations to be involved in cleanliness programs of the city,” said Yeo.
However, the mayor also reminded the people to not only practise the gotong royong spirit during the implementation of any cleanliness campaign but to also turn it into a way of life.
In early March, Sabah International Dynamic Management (SIDMA) College became the first college to join DBKK’s community service efforts.
Yeo said DBKK had also gotten a nod from Universiti Malaysia Sabah to be its next partner and probably the first public higher learning institution to join in its community service program.
In addition, he said that DBKK was also looking into the participation of Asian Tourism International College and University College Sabah Foundation in the program.
At the launch, Jesselton College director Prof Dr Kong Hoon Khoon handed over the DBKK – Jesselton College memorandum of understanding to Yeo, stating the college’s pledge to maintain the cleanliness of the aforementioned area, every three months on the Saturday of the month’s second week between 7am to 11am till April 16, 2017.
Almost 280 DBKK department heads and staff, as well as stakeholders of the area also joined in the gotong royong to clean up the areas yesterday.
Also partaking in the gotong royong were DBKK director general Joannes Solidau, DBKK City Environmental Health Department director Robert Lipon, DBKK department heads, Jesselton College department heads and students as well as sponsors.
