MILO Breakfast Day a roaring success

- By Chok Sim Yee

KOTA KINABALU: MILO Malaysia Breakfast Day kicked off for the first time in Kota Kinabalu yesterday, serving a nutritious breakfast and a healthy dose of fun and educational activities to an energized crowd of approximately 2,500.

Themed “Own the Day” and part of MILO’s on-going Breakfast Movement, the fourth annual event continues to drive the importance of breakfast as an essential source of energy to allow one to perform at one’s best throughout the day.

It also encourages parents to be role models in cultivating healthy habits with their children by starting the day with a wholesome meal.

Nutritionist Geo Allen George said people lose 80 per cent of energy reserves after long hours of sleep in order to restore muscles and repair tissues, thus having breakfast was important to replenish energy.

Recent findings from MyBreakfast Study, Malaysia’s first comprehensive nationwide study on breakfast habits involving 8,705 school children, highlighted that not only do one in four children skip breakfast at least three days a week, apparently breakfast skipping is also widespread in Sabah and Sarawak.

Geo said those who skipped breakfast would experience low physical activity level. Hence, he stressed on the importance of having breakfast complemented by malted beverage such as MILO, which contains calcium, vitamin B1, B2 and B3, to meet the Recommended Nutrient Intake (RNI).

“MILO has high energy content which helps in (enhancing) energy and concentration in study,” he said.

Meanwhile, Vanessa Lim, brand manager of MILO, Nestlé (Malaysia) Berhad, said the company chose to bring the event to Kota Kinabalu this year in order to reach out to more Malaysians to further spread the message on the benefits of having breakfast.

“Malaysia Breakfast Day is an initiative that is close to our hearts and we have been working to amplify our efforts in educating Malaysians to maximize their potential throughout the day starting with breakfast. Last year, we reached out to an estimated 3.2 million school children to continue the breakfast education. This year, we are reaching out to even more Malaysians, primarily parents, to rethink their breakfast habits and to recognize the need of replenishing their energy starting with a healthy family breakfast so they can Own the Day, every day.”

The breakfast event hosted activities for everyone, including Zumba, football, educational games and also Body Mass Index checks with nutritionists available for consultation at the Wellness Zone.

Nursing helper, Helmi Rahim, aged 30, came along with his family of six when he heard that the MILO Breakfast Day was coming to KK.

As a person who religiously encourages having breakfast every morning, he knew this was the place to be with them on a beautiful Sunday.

“My family and I got here bright and early and was served a wholesome breakfast, followed by fun-filled activities for my kids and family. It was a great event, something we should definitely have more of in Kota Kinabalu. I hope that MILO will come back again soon,”he shared.

Another participant shared similar sentiments. Seventeenyear-old SMK Sanzac student Aiman Hakim who brought his mother and aunties to the event was over the moon when he enthused, “The Zumba session was so upbeat.

It felt like everyone was spreading their energy to each other. “I loved it! And the breakfast with MILO was really great. I’m glad I found out about this on Facebook and hope that MILO will continue coming back to KK City with their Breakfast Day event.”

Melaka was the first city to host this year’s MILO Malaysia Breakfast Day on March 27. Following the event held in Kuantan on April 10 and Kota Kinabalu, the event will head to Padang Perbadanan Pasir Gudang in Johor on April 23, Universiti Sains Malaysia in Penang on May 15, Padang Merdeka in Kuching, Sarawak on May 22 and finally culminate with the grand finale at Kompleks Perbadanan Putrajaya, Precinct 3 in Putrajaya on May 29.
