ALOR SETAR: A 10-year-old boy who was watching television sustained head injuries when a tree, believed to be 100 years old, crashed through the roof of his Kampung Bakar Sampah home in Sik, yesterday.

Norhamidah Ismail, 33, said during the incident, her son Muhammad Ammar Ashraf Mohamad Zamri was watching television in the living room with his younger brother Mohamad Haziq Hibatullah, 9, while she was in the kitchen.

“It was raining heavily during a thunderstorm that evening. When the rain stopped, I heard a loud noise from the middle part of my house at about 7.30pm.

“I rushed to look for my boys but it was dark as there was a power failure at the same time.

“I managed to find them but did not realise that Ammar was injured. I only found out when told by a neighbour who came to help,” she said when met at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital (HSB), here yesterday.

Norhamidah said the neighbour who provided temporary shelter was surprised to see her son’s head bleeding and immediately compressed it with a cloth before taking him to the Sik Hospital for treatment.

“The doctor who treated my son advised me to send him to the HSB for a CT scan,” she said, adding that it was at the HSB that she found out her son had suffered a fractured skull and nose. She said the boy also received stitches on his head.

“I was grateful that he was conscious and able to talk when he was being treated. He is in stable condition. Thank God his younger brother was not injured,” she said.

Norhamidah, who had been renting the house for the past 10 years hoped that the authorities would cut down old trees in the area as she was worried such trees might pose a danger to other residents.
