Timorese jailed, fined over fake MyKad

KOTA KINABALU: A Timorese man was sentenced to 16 months’ jail and fined RM3,000, in default four months’ jail for possessing a fake MyKad.

Alowisus Leo, 33, who was brought before magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun, pleaded guilty to a charge under Regulation 25 (1) (e) of the National Registration Regulations 1990 (Amendment 2007).

The indictment provides for a maximum jail term of three years and a fine of up to RM20,000, upon conviction.

The accused was found in possession of a MyKad under his own name with serial numbers 830715-12-5611 at Jalan Bantayan, Inanam on April 25.

In pleading for leniency, Alowisus, who was unrepresented, told the court that he still has parents who depend on him and he had obtained the fake MyKad from an agent who sold it to him for RM1,000.

Meanwhile, another man was jailed 18 months by the same court for committing a similar offence.

The magistrate imposed the jail sentence on Azlan Alibasa, 27, after he admitted to a charge under Regulation 25 (1) (e) of the National Registration Regulations 1990 (Amendment 2007).

Azlan, who was unrepresented, had in his possession a fake MyKad bearing numbers 890308-12-5381 at Jalan Pintas, Penampang on April 15.

The court also ordered Alowisus and Azlan to be referred to the Immigration Department after serving their sentences.
