Our situation not as bad as BN’s – Chong

-

KUCHING: State DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen said though there was bickering between his party and PKR Sarawak their situation was better than BN’s.

“Yes, there are differences but in many political coalitions, this is the process of cooperation. At the end of the day, we are moving towards a front or coalition.

“If you compare this to Umno, which is saying it all and the others just accept it, or PBB which says everything and the other component parties like SUPP just take it, our situation is better than them,” he said when responding to a question at the DAP daily press conference here yesterday.

Chong, who will defend Kota Sentosa, said the state DAP was not fighting against PKR but “let’s focus on fighting the BN.”

In Batu Kitang where both DAP and PKR are fielding a candidate each, he said: “I have already called for a consolidation of votes to DAP. Let us capture this Batu Kitang seat.”

He added that DAP and PKR Sarawak were undergoing an evolution process, which meant that their differences would be sorted out eventually.

He called upon voters in Batu Kitang to vote for DAP candidate Abdul Aziz Isa so that state DAP will have a multi-racial line-up of elected representatives.

“If he (Aziz) is elected, he will shake the power base of PBB, attracting more young and aspiring Malay graduates to join DAP to strengthen the opposition force.”

Following a visit to Mile 10, Padawan here with Aziz yesterday, Chong said “the response in Batu Kitang is good”.

He said the state would see a new political landscape if Aziz wins in Batu Kitang.

According to Aziz, 58.8 per cent of the 17,625 voters in Batu Kitang are Chinese, 20.7 per cent are Malays and 20.1 per cent are Dayaks.

Met by reporters later, Aziz said his opponent would be BN-SUPP candidate Lo Khere Chiang and not PKR candidate Voon Shiak Ni. Even though the battle for Batu Kitang is a five-cornered fight, it is believed that only Aziz, Lo and Voon are serious contenders.
