Two Taiwanese escape capture by scammers to seek police help

-

MIRI: Two Taiwanese men on Tuesday night fled from a house where a scam was being operated by a syndicate.

A police report on their plight was filed at Lutong Police Station by one of the escapees around 11pm that night.

It was learnt that they were among 20 others held inside a bungalow and forced to scam the public via telephone conversations.

During their captivity, they were forbidden to go out from the house.

The duo in their 20’s managed to escape from the house in Desa Pujut by climbing up its gate unnoticed by the syndicate’s men.

They then asked for help from passers-by who sent them to Lutong Police Station.

The State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief, SAC Dev Kumar contacted by The Borneo Post on Thursday confirmed receiving a report on the incident.

It was understood that one of the escapees had arrived in Miri on April 11 from Taiwan via Kota Kinabalu in Sabah.

His wife arrived two days later and they were both held inside the house together with 20 other hostages.

Acting on the report lodged, a team from Miri CID personnel stormed the house the same night (April 26), but the syndicate and 20 other hostages had vacated the house.

The case is being investigated under Section 347 of the Penal Code for wrongful confinement.
