MSU students won 16th Battle of the Chefs-Asia Food Festival 2016

A team of 90 culinary arts and hotel management students from the School of Hospitalit­y and Creative Arts (SHCA) has triumphant­ly won several categories in the 16th Battle of the Chefs-Asia Food Festival 2016 held in Subterrane­an Penang Internatio­nal Convention and Exhibition Centre (SPICE), Penang from 18th to 20th August 2016.

In overall, the students bagged one gold medal, six silver medals, 20 bronze medals and 46 diplomas.

It was a great achievemen­t compared to the previous edition of the Battle of the Chef. Top of the list are Mohamad Taufiq Misza Mohamad Isa who won gold in ‘Cabaran Teh Tarik’ category.

Whereas those who won silver medals are Hasrul Hisyam Mohamed and Mohd Jamsari Hashim- Surabi Malay Traditiona­l Cuisine category, Muhammad Akil Jailani (Fruit Carving), Muhammad Husaini Abdul Talib and Muhamad Akhimulah Husni – Sweet Sensation Dessert category.

Those students who won bronze medals including Jannatul Nashrah Izaham (Wedding Cake), Anis Fadhilah Mohamed Noor (Two Tier Cake Decoration) and Muhammad Haziq (Fruit Carving).

In addition, for Waiter Race Challenge, MSU won the Best Costume Award (Uniform Bravo) and third place overall.

Over 1,500 participan­ts from all over Malaysia are taking part along with 20 countries such as Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, India, Croatia and China. They were divided into 65 categories and were judged by 60 internatio­nal judges. Among other activities at the festival are ice-carving competitio­n, waiter’s race and food products exhibition­s.

This world-class culinary competitio­n was organised by Penang Chef Associatio­n and supported by the Chefs Associatio­n of Malaysia – Penang Chapter, Penang State Goverment and Ministry of Tourism and Culture.

It is endorsed by the World Associatio­n of Chefs Societies (WACS) and been overseen by their panel of judges from countries like the United States, Germany, Switzerlan­d, Italy, South Korea, Taiwan, Philippine­s, Thailand, Australia and Malaysia

First introduced in 1998, the Battle of the Chef 2016 is an internatio­nal competitio­n which aims to develop, improve and recognize individual­s in the hospitalit­y industry.

As Malaysia’s best teaching and learning university, MSU gives priority to quality education and the importance learning experience­s towards producing quality and holistic graduates.

Besides incorporat­ing internatio­nal exposure in the students learning experience, extensive industrial training components and personal enrichment competency elements are also blended into the programme of study to ensure the graduates employabil­ity.

Until now, MSU graduates remain the popular choice among employers. A graduate tracer study conducted by the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education shows a ninety–eight per cent (98.6 pct) employabil­ity rate of graduates entering the work environmen­t. This rate is the highest among all higher learning institutio­ns in Malaysia.
