Brunei school makes a splash at SIE 2016
KOTA KINABALU: One of the very well received exhibitors from Brunei at SIE 2016, Jerudong International School (JIS), expressed gratitude to the Brunei Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade for their support and the Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce for providing the opportunity to showcase the high quality international education available at Sabah’s doorstep.
Located just a short flight from Kota Kinabalu on a 300-acre fully WiFi site with students from over 50 countries, the school has exceptionally well equipped, stateof-the-art teaching and sporting facilities, a purpose built Music School and a 725-seat Auditorium, as well as recently completed Boarding Houses which make the school a home away from home for its 250 boarders.
Through the school’s participation in SIE 2016, Sabahans have found out about Brunei’s best kept secret, that a world-class education can be accessed in their neighbouring country, and how cost effective it can be in comparison to similar quality education overseas.
On entering the Sixth Form, JIS students can choose between British (GCE) A Levels and the International Baccalaureate Diploma programme.
Reflecting on recent examination results and university placements, Dean of Higher Education, Russell Mann, representing the school at SIE 2016, commented that with an average IB Diploma score of 37.3, and 45% of the graduating cohort achieving 40 points or above, it is unsurprising that JIS IB graduates have yet again secured places at the most competitive tertiary institutions in the world, such as Cambridge University in the UK and New York University Abu Dhabi, at which a graduate with 43 points has been rewarded with a fully funded scholarship for a four-year undergraduate degree programme. Other IB high flyers will be winging their way to the Netherlands to study Engineering at Delft, to the UK to read Medicine at Nottingham and International Relations at Bath, and Australia to pursue Politics, Philosophy and Economics combined with Law at the Australian National University in Canberra.
With 60% of GCE A Level graduates achieving A*- B grades, some standout individual performances include one graduate with 5 A*/A grades, eight students with 4 A*/A grades and five others with 3 A*/A grades. JIS A Level graduates will soon be taking up their well deserved places at universities around the globe, including UCLA, the University of Virginia and NYU in the United States, McGill, Toronto, UBC, Alberta, Queen’s and Dalhousie in Canada, Melbourne, Monash, UNSW, the University of Queensland and other Group of Eight Universities in Australia and Maastricht in The Netherlands to name but a few.
UK bound A Level graduates will be pursuing degrees in a broad range of disciplines at well known institutions, such as Engineering at Imperial College London, Manchester, Loughborough, Leeds and Bath, Medicine at Cardiff, Dentistry at Bristol, Law at Nottingham, Manchester, SOAS and Queen Mary, Economics at Edinburgh and Leicester, Psychology at King’s, Management at Manchester, Zoology at Southampton, Sports Science at Loughborough and Exeter, Urban Planning and Sociology at Newcastle, Physics at Lancaster, Architecture at UWE Bristol and Accounting and Financial Management at Sheffield.
Russell commented that the school’s consistently outstanding higher education outcomes are a credit to his team of specialist advisers, including highly experienced mentors for Oxbridge, Medicine, Law, Engineering and Architecture, as well as a dedicated US College Counsellor, all of whom work tirelessly throughout the year to ensure the best possible placements for each and every JIS graduate. The school’s annual Summer Camp, run every July, with live-in options of one to three weeks, was of particular interest to Sabah residents attending the SIE 2016 Expo.
