Fake cops caught after robbing hotel guest

-

SIBU: Swift action led to the arrest of two criminals who impersonated as policemen at a hotel on Friday morning before they stole the valuables and cash of a hotel patron whom they accused of drugs.

The 26-year-old victim lodged a police report after the crime, saying the criminals took his cash and handphone. He lost RM864 in the fraud. Sibu deputy police chief Supt Martin Koo confirmed the arrest, saying they sprang into action after receiving the report.

He said at 1am yesterday, they arrested the first suspect at Wong Nai Siong Road.

He said further probe led them to arrest the second suspect in a budget hotel in the town centre.

“The crime occurred when the 26-year-old had checked into the hotel, and at 10am on Friday, the two men dashed into his room with keys they obtained from the counter.”

Koo believed the two criminals had convinced the worker at the hotel counter they were policemen checking on drug cases.

He said police further believed the counter staff handed the room key to the duo.

“When the two entered the room of the victim, they identified themselves as policemen before accusing the victim of selling drugs.”

He said the two took the excuse to check his belongings and the room before swiping his money and handphone.

The two criminals told the victim they would be back in 15 minutes, which they did not.

Koo said the two suspects were both aged 33. He assured the police treated the case seriously and were probing thoroughly.
