KOTA KINABALU: The Borneo Football Cup 2016 kicked off with the under-16 competition at the Likas Stadium here yesterday.

Six teams are vying for top honour in the three-day competition, which includes foreign team Ipigasa United of the Philippines.

The rest are Labuan FC, TABS, Jubilo, DPM and TABS Menggatal in the annual event organised by Borneo Sports & Adventure Holidays.

The under-16 competition will continue today and the final tomorrow with the matches for both days to be played at the Penampang Stadium.

In a statement yesterday, Borneo Sports & Adventure Holidays managing director and former Sabah striker Scott Ollerenshaw said the tournament will also feature the under-11, under-12, under-13, under-14 and under-15 competitions.

The under-14 competition will take place from September 21-23, under-15 (September 2224), under-11 (September 2628), under-12 (September 28-30) and under-13 (September 29 to October 1).

The venues used are Likas Stadium including the artificial football pitch, Penampang Stadium and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) stadium.

“The football loving public are encouraged to watch the Champions of Tomorrow strut their stuff...entry is free.

“Sabah’s junior team too will test themselves against foreign teams from Australia, Philippines, India and Indonesia as well as from around the country,” Ollerenshaw said.

He added that the tournament is a youth development tournament for AFC countries in the region and that it had produced players that have gone on to play in top leagues.

“Australians Steve Kuzmonovski, Michael Trajkovski and Nathan Konstandopoulos who now play professionally in the A-League had all made their way to Sabah to participate in the Borneo Cup in years gone by,” Ollerenshaw pointed out.
