Over 120 hopefuls attend President Cup squad selection trials

-

KOTA KINABALU: Some 120 hopefuls turned up to try their luck at donning state colours at the President Cup squad selection trials at the Likas Stadium here two days ago.

The selection panel was led by head coach Justin Ganai and he was assisted by former reserve league player Burhan Ajui.

“Most of the youngsters that turned up were representatives from their respective districts. These were players who were involved in the Chief Minister Cup tournament including those who played in the preliminary round and in the finals in Tawau.

“The trials will continue tomorrow and those who get selected will need to undergo another session which is scheduled to be held on November 28,” he said when met here yesterday.

Justin hoped there would be some talents that could help the squad achieve better results next season after finishing second from the bottom of the 10-team Group B standings this year.

“We are also looking for strikers that can score goals,” he said, while adding that the squad will have slots for 25 players next season.

Justin revealed that 10 players were retained from the previous squad, while six others are still under consideration and further evaluation.

“Those who are not retained have either exceeded the age limit for the President Cup competition or have been absorbed into the senior team.

“We also have several players who may join from the Youth Squad after exceeding the age restriction of 19. However, they too must undergo the selection trials,” he said.
