Call for review of BN consensus
KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Youth vice chief Khairul Azwan Harun has called on his party leadership to reconsider the Barisan Nasional (BN) alliance if the ruling coalition’s other component parties do not fulfil their roles and win back ethnic support.
He added that it would be pointless for Umno to help the others if they could not win voter support from the other ethnicities, especially the Chinese.
“I want to remind our friends in the component parties who just want to play safe. They want to contest in areas which are easy to win and still want to continue programmes that are apparently to defend the interests of the Chinese race without realising such actions are counter-productive.
“The more aid given to Chinese schools, the more Chinese voters don’t support and vote for us.
“In fact, it is not extreme for me to say that if DAP has their hearts, we should review the BN consensus especially the status quo and the social contract. There needs to be courage to review the BN consensus if the DAP narrative continues to be held by the Chinese voters,” he said in his wrap-up speech at the Putra World Trade Centre here.
Khairul, who is popularly called by his moniker Azwanbro, went on to say that if co-operation within the BN coalition failed, Umno might be inclined to form new alliances with other parties on a religious platform instead.
“If they continue to be incited and eat DAP’s poison, they would not return to the inclusive BN consensus.
“Do not be surprised if political parties that have the same wavelength as us and want this country to be led by those who want the Islamic Shariah to be strengthened, will be united with us,” he added. The Perak Umno leader also took multiple jabs at the DAP, claiming the Opposition party to be a “chauvinistic Chinese party”, “anti-Malay”, and “anti-Islam” which has fooled Chinese voters with their propaganda.
“The Chinese voters have eaten dedak, which has been thrown by the DAP leaders. They have become victims to DAP’s incitement,” he said.
Dedak which literally means “chicken feed” is also a derogatory euphemism to describe cash handouts.
