GEORGE TOWN: Police have arrested two men to help in the investigation into Thursday night’s shooting at the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway that resulted in three people killed and four injured.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said yesterday one of the men was arrested at the scene that night and the other at the Penang Hospital where he sought treatment late Thursday night.

The men, aged 32 and 37, have been remanded for seven days from yesterday on an order issued by George Town Sessions Court senior assistant registrar Ahmad Tajuddin Zain, he added.

Khalid said investigation revealed that the firearm used in the shooting was registered with a security firm.

“One of the suspects has a permit to carry and use firearms,” he said to reporters after the signing of a memorandum of agreement between the Royal Malaysia Police and Universiti Sains Malaysia yesterday. The shooting, which took place at 7.15pm, resulted in three men killed and four people injured.

The dead were identified as Datuk Ong Teik Kwang, 32, Senthil Murugiah, 38, and Choi Hon Ming, 32. The injured were Lee Hong Boon, 56, Nurul Huda Aziz, 38, Arivarni Krishnan, 33, and RTM cameraman Mohamad Amirul Amin Mohamed Amer, 28.

One of the arrested men was also injured.

It was reported that Ong, who was driving a BMW car, was shot in the neck and died on the spot. Choi also died in the car from a stray bullet while Senthil was shot by the roadside about 50 metres from the car. The injured people, except for the arrested man, are receiving treatment at the Penang Hospital. Lee, Nurul Huda and Arivarni were passing by the spot when they were shot.

The shooting took place close to the exit from the Penang Bridge and caused a massive traffic congestion for about three hours from George Town to Butterworth when police closed the access to the mainland. Khalid said police believed that one of the arrested men had mental problems.
