KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Sri Zulhasnan Rafique said Kuala Lumpur intends to elevate ties with Washington to greater heights as he is named Malaysia’s new ambassador to the United States.

Zulhasnan said he was committed to delivering the best service and contribution towards achieving the aspirations and objectives of Malaysia-US bilateral relations.

In a statement issued on the heels of his appointment, the ambassador-designate noted that the US was one of the world’s biggest economies and most advanced superpower.

“I view my appointment as a clear sign of intent by the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak) and the leadership to continue, even elevate and strengthen the good relationship between Malaysia and the US that has long been existent since our nation’s independence,” he said.

Zulhasnan, who replaces Datuk Dr Awang Adek Hussin, recorded his appreciation to Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V and Najib for their faith in appointing him as Malaysia’s new man in Washington.

The Foreign Ministry announced the appointment in a separate statement earlier yesterday.

“I view this appointment as a major call of duty and a decree on me to represent the leadership and all Malaysians,” said Zulhasnan who served as Federal Territories minister from 2006 to 2009.
