Silbings fined RM40,000 over colouring on dried shrimps

KOTA KINABALU: Two siblings were each fined RM20,000, in default, six months’ jail by the Sessions Court here yesterday for misleading or deceiving the public on the nature of their goods by spraying colouring on the dried shrimps to make it look as if they were new and fresh.

Sessions Court judge Azreena Aziz fined Abdul Naser Jainuk, 56, and Nura Imam Anuk, 44, after both pleaded guilty as charged under Section 9 (a) of the Consumer Protection Act 1999 and punishable under Section 25 (1) (b) of the same Act.

The charge read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code, shall be liable to a fine not exceeding RM100,000 or imprisonme­nt for a term not exceeding three years, or both, upon conviction.

The two siblings admitted to deceiving the public by spraying colouring on the 6.9 kilograms of dried shrimps to make them look fresh, new and reddish when in fact the actual colour of the dried shrimps were pale white.

They allegedly committed the offence at the salted fish shop in Sinsuran here on October 20, 2016.

The facts of the case stated that a check was conducted at the premises following a public complaint and a video clip, which went viral on the social media Facebook alleging/showing that the dried shrimps were sprayed with colouring by workers at the shop.

Meanwhile, a man will stand trial in the Sessions Court here on July 3-5 this year for allegedly raping his own daughter.

The 61-year-old man, who appeared before Sessions Court judge Ainul Shahrin Mohamed, was charged under Section 376 (3) of the Penal Code, which is punishable with imprisonme­nt of up to 30 years and whipping, upon conviction.

The accused, who was denied bail, was alleged to have committed the offence at a village in Inanam in May 2016.
