KPJ launches cancer awareness campaign

KOTA KINABALU: The KPJ Sabah Specialist Hospital on Saturday launched its three-month World Cancer Day awareness campaign with the theme, “We Can, I Can” at the hospital here.

The campaign will involve a fundraisin­g, a roadshow to raise awareness and activities to educate the public on avoidable risk factors, for example, smoking and tobacco exposure, alcohol, poor diet etc.

During the campaign, KPJ will also be launching various cancer screening and radiothera­py promotion packages with attractive discount offers.

To celebrate this special occasion, KPJ Sabah also gave out 50 free mammogram and 50 free prostate screening vouchers to the public on Saturday on a first-comefirst-served basis.

There were also talks about various cancer-related topics by KPJ’s Resident Consultant Gynae-Oncologist and KPJ’s Resident Consultant Oncologist, Dato Dr Jaswant Singh.

The public was also treated with basic health training, a self-breast examinatio­n and many more.

World Cancer Day takes place every year on February 4. It is a global event that aims to unite all to take action and fight against cancer with the main focus on prevention, detection and treatment.

Community Developmen­t and Community Affairs Minister Datuk Jainab Ahmad Ayid officiated at the launch of the campaign on Saturday.

Jainab in her speech expressed her gratitude towards KPJ, saying that the hospital had done a tremendous job as a pioneer of radiothera­py and oncology in Sabah.

She was pleased to see that this campaign had united the people of Sabah to stand together and fight against cancer.

She also urged the public to spread the spirit of awareness towards their loved ones.

Jainab strongly believes that early detection is the key to prevention.

Also present in the event were the Medical Director of KPJ Sabah Professor Datuk Dr Ajaz Ahmad Nabijan, Chief Executive Director of KPJ Sabah Nor Azlina Jemain and Sabah’s renowned breast cancer survivor, Rainty Tioh.
