First Sabah Sky Lantern Festival on March 18

KOTA KINABALU: The first Sabah Sky Lantern Festival jointly organised by Rotary Club of KK Mandarin and Sabah Institute of Art, will be held on March 18 at Raintree Beach Resort, with a record 700 sky lanterns to be launched into the sky.

The organising partners revealed that the main objectives of organising the lantern festival are to promote Chinese culture, raise awareness on environmen­tal protection and raise funds for charity organisati­ons.

The event is organised with the support of the Sabah Associatio­n of Tour & Travel Agents (Satta), The Associatio­n of Graduates from Universiti­es and Colleges of China Malaysia, Sabah Liaison Committee, Tuaran Hakka Associatio­n and Alumni of the Friendship of Blossom.

Organising chairman KC Koh said the event would be held from 4pm to 9.30pm at Tuaran Raintree Beach Resort (former Mimpian Jadi).

While admission is free, those who want to participat­e can do so by sponsoring a sky lantern at RM198 per piece.

This new outdoor activity for Sabah has the potential of becoming an annual tourism event.

The Sabah Sky Lantern Festival offers multi-level sponsorshi­p by corporate owners and community leaders to fund this tourism, cultural and charity event, including the Gold Cultural Ambassador (RM28,000); Silver Cultural Ambassador (RM18,000); Bronze Cultural Ambassador (RM8,000); Love Hearted Sponsorshi­p (RM5,000); Warm Hearted Sponsorshi­p (RM3,000) and Compassion­ate Sponsorshi­p (RM2,000).

Part of the proceeds will be donated to Jireh Orphanage Home (Tuaran) and Sabah Methodist Children’s Home for their operation expenses.
