Krasnodar come back twice to hold leaders Spartak
MOSCOW: Krasnodar twice came from behind to grab a 2-2 draw against Russian Premier League table-toppers Spartak Moscow on Sunday, dashing the Muscovites’ hopes of stretching their lead.
Nine-time former champions Spartak, who are seeking their first domestic title since 2001, are five points clear of Zenit St Petersburg, who played out a goalless draw with reigning champions CSKA Moscow on Saturday.
“The result is fair as both teams fought hard throughout the match,” Spartak manager Massimo Carrera said.
Spartak got off to a flying start through Brazilian midfielder Fernando, who scored after just three minutes with a 25-yard freekick.
Krasnodar levelled after just 15 minutes when Spartak full-back Serdar Tasci put through his own goal as he attempted to clear a shot by Vyacheslav Podberyozkin.
Luiz Adriano restored Spartak’s lead nine minutes after the interval but in the 73rd minute Fedor Smolov rescued a point for the home side with a penalty which took his season-leading goals tally to 11. Smolov was forced off the pitch in the 82nd minute with a thigh injury which meant Krasnodar had to finish the game with 10 men as they had already used their three substitutes.
However, Spartak were unable to capitalise on their numerical advantage.
“We’re pleased with the result, taking into consideration the fact that we trailed twice and finished the match with 10 men,” said Krasnodar head coach Igor Shalimov.
