Eight policemen charged with corruption

KUALA LUMPUR: Eight policemen, including an officer, pleaded not guilty in three Sessions Court here yesterday to various corruption charges.

In the court before judge Allaudeen Ismail, ASP Mohamad Zafrul Zulkifli, 37, and Lance Corporal Mohamad Hasirun Abu Hassan, 29, were charged with soliciting RM2,000 and RM1,500, respective­ly, from a Myanmar national, Kyaw Phone Naing, as an inducement to release his country mate, Nang Cherry, who was detained for allegedly holding a fake UNCHR card.

Meanwhile, Lance Corporal Mohd Saffuan Mat Salleh, 31, and Auxiliary Lance Corporal Muhammad Huzzaini Esman, 29, were charged with accepting RM1,500 from Kyaw for the same purpose.

The policemen, from the Dang Wangi police station, were alleged to have committed the offence at a car park behind a hotel in Jalan Pudu here between 6 pm and 7.30 pm on Jan 28 last year.

Mohamad Zafrul and Mohamad Hasirun, represente­d by lawyer Hamidi Mohd Noh, were allowed bail of RM15,000 and RM10,000 with one surety, respective­ly, while bail for Mohd Saffuan and Muhammad Huzzaini, represente­d by lawyer Zainal Omar, was set at RM10,000 in one surety each.

The court also ordered Mohamad Zafrul to surrender his passport and set April 12 for mention.

Deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Akram Gharib, from MACC, prosecuted.

In the court before judge Madihah Harullah, Corporal Abd Rahim Yusak, 60, and Constable Mohd Hafis Hafizi Azhari, 26, both from the Sentul police headquarte­rs, were jointly charged with soliciting RM1,500 from one Alif Faisal Amran.

It was as an inducement for the policemen to not take action against Alif Faisal for allegedly driving a vehicle with an expired road tax and with no insurance coverage, and also to not detain one Mohd Hariz Zaifan Mohd Zanua, who was in the police wanted list.

Mohd Hafis was also charged with agreeing to accept RM500 from Alif Faisal for the same purpose, while Abd Rahim was also charged under Section 165 of the Penal Code with accepting RM100 from Alif Faisal despite knowing that the transactio­n was connected with his official function.

The offences were allegedly committed in the federal capital between 10 pm and 2.10 am between Sept 28 and 30, 2013.

The two policemen, who were unrepresen­ted, were allowed bail of RM7,000 in one surety each.

The court set April 10 for mention.

In the court before judge Azura Alwi, Corporal Azuan Khalid, 49 and Corporal Zulazri Idris, 37, from the Wangsa Maju police headquarte­rs, were charged with agreeing to accept RM1,500 from one Mohd Shahruniza­d Sahar, 30 , as an inducement to release three Indonesian workers who were detained.

They were alleged to have committed the offence at a car park near Maybank Berhad, Section 5, Jalan Wangsa Delima 11 here at 9.20 am on Dec 15, 2015.

Azuan also faced two other charges with soliciting RM3,000 for himself, and obtaining RM500 from Mohd Shahruniza­d for the same purpose.

The offence was allegedly committed near the Batu Toll Plaza, Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway, Off Jalan Kucing here at 9 am on Dec 15, 2015.

Deputy public prosecutor from MACC, Abdul Rashid Sulaiman, who prosecuted in the case, offered bail at RM15,000 in one surety for each of the accused.

However, lawyers Mohd Fahmi Mat Rodzi and Mohd Norazihan Adnan, representi­ng Azuan and Zulazri, respective­ly, requested for a lower bail.

Azura then set bail at RM10,000 in one surety for Azuan and bail for Zulazri was set at RM5,000 in one surety.

The court also set March 30 for mention.

For offences under under the MACC Act, the policemen were either charged under Section 16(a)(A) or Section 17(a) of the law which provide an imprisonme­nt for up to 20 years and fine of five times the amount of the gratificat­ion, or RM10,000, whichever is higher, if found guilty.
