PLC Research Scheme to be launched next quarter — SC

-

KUALA LUMPUR: The small and mid-cap public-listed company (PLC) research scheme which will help deepen Malaysia’s capital market, will likely be launched in the next quarter, says the Securities Commission.

Chairman Tan Sri Ranjit Ajit Singh said the independent research scheme, currently in its final stage, would offer greater profiling and investor participation in this sector.

“There isn’t sufficient research coverage for the midcap companies in Malaysia, therefore, there isn’t much awareness on what these companies do.

“We want to create a funded mechanism for research companies to undertake this research,” he told a press conference in conjunction with the release of SC’s 2016 Annual Report here yesterday.

Ranjit said a dedicated task force comprising the industry, SC and Bursa Malaysia would be formed to operationalise all initiatives under the scheme.

On funding, he said, some allocation would be put aside by the regulatory body to enable the set-up of the scheme and gradually, it will be independently funded by participating companies.

The SC had previously stated that some RM3 billion would be chanelled into this sector from government-linked investment companies.

Meanwhile, the annual report revealed that Malaysia’s capital market had grown to RM2.84 trillion in 2016 with total fundraising amounting to RM98.5 billion.

As of March this year, the overall capital market had increased in size to RM2.97 trillion.
