KOTA KINABALU: A comprehensive investigation is being conducted to look into why Sabah's performance has been declining including in this season's Premier League.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman who is also president of the Sabah Football Association (Safa) said an independent committee has been formed to investigate thoroughly why the team's performance is so poor.

“The committee will investigate what is wrong and defective or maybe if there is a lack of cooperation within Safa and how to improve the performance of the team.

“The investigation is important to identify why our team is underperforming because millions of ringgit have been spent in the hope of enhancing the performance of the players.

“I will review the results of the inquiry and thereafter I will discuss with the Safa management on how to improve our team as a whole,” Musa said in his opening speech at the Safa Annual Congress yesterday.

Musa who is also Finance Minister said the time has come for Sabah to have a formidable team.

But in the seven league matches played so far this season, they have won only once and lost five, while one match ended in a draw.

“I am ready to hear the views of all parties to improve the team or change what needs to be changed to improve their performance.

“This includes whether the players should be changed. What is important is that we all work together to strengthen Safa.

“We have tried many different ways and we realise it is not easy to hit it spot on because many are involved in the management,” he said.

Towards this end Musa said Safa would continue to give serious attention to the development of young players in the state.

“We want to produce talented players from all over Sabah who are interested in football. We will give them attention so that they can become the best players.

“We will give necessary provision because this is Safa's long term investment to move forward,” he said.

Meanwhile, Musa said Safa's old debts were consolidated from time to time to ensure that Safa would be unencumbered.

Also present at the congress were Youth and Sports Ministercum Safa deputy president 1 Datuk Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan, deputy president 2 Datuk Lawrence Gimbang, vice president 1 Datuk Osman Jamal, vice president 2 Datuk Yusof Kassim, vice president 3 Datuk Jahid Jahim, vice president 4 Johari Ayub, secretary general Alijus Sipil, honorary treasurer Dr Lawrence Chu Jan and supreme council committee members and Safa district delegates.
