Agency to curb cross-border crimes
KOTA SAMARAHAN: A Border Safety Agency will soon be set up in the state which will work with other law enforcement agencies to monitor and curb cross-border crimes.
This was disclosed by First Infantry Division commander Major General Datuk Stephen Mundaw to the press yesterday.
“We are looking to work closely with other agencies related to safety in the state. We hope the situation along the country’s borders will always remain under control,”
He also assured Malaysians that the situation at the MalaysiaIndonesia border in Sarawak was always under control under the watchful eyes of the military.
According to him, army personnel on guard at the Malaysia-Indonesia border were ordered to be more alert and aggressive while on duty. They should not only concentrate on the back roads (jalan tikus) but the main ones (jalan gajah) too.
“Just recently (on Sunday) during ‘Ops Serkap’ the 13th Royal Malay Regiment stopped an attempt to smuggle a stolen car across the border. This shows the army is alert at all times when patrolling our borders,” he added.
During the operation, the driver of the (stolen) vehicle was flagged down by army personnel at ‘jalan tikus’ some 200m from the Malaysia-Indonesia border.
Earlier, Mundaw officiated at the the closing ceremony of National Institute of Public Administration’s (Intan) National Integration Module and Self Strengthening course at the First Infantry Division headquarters in Muara Tuang Camp, Kota Samarahan.
The 63 participants of the course are also currently undergoing training at the institute.
Among them was Ivy (one name) from Tawau, Sabah who was awarded the best overall participant.
Third Brigade commander General Mohd Bustaman Mat Zin, Sarawak Intan director Dr Jasmine Edmund and Sarawak Ministry of Defence director Norisal Saili were also present at the function.
