‘Nepotism’ in Bollywood draws mixed reactions

-

MUMBAI: Widespread allegations of nepotism in the casting for roles in Bollywood have met with mixed reactions among actors.

The general consensus is that it really exists, but stars tread gently on this issue for fear of reprisals.

In frank remarks to newsmen, outspoken actor Rajkummar Rao said: “I love watching talented actors on screen, I don’t mind if they’re somebody’s son or daughter in the industry. I want to see talent on screen. The problem would be if they are not talented and they are still on screen, then that’s not fair! So, if someone is worthy and talented,

I don’t mind if they’re somebody’s son or daughter in the industry. I want to see talent on screen. The problem would be if they are not talented and they are still on screen, then that’s not fair! Rajkummar Rao, actor

then why not? I have no problem with that.”

Last Tuesday, during a press conference to mark his birthday, actor Aamir Khan was asked for his opinion on the ‘nepotism’ charge that Kangana Ranaut had levelled against director Karan Johar. On Karan’s chat show, Ranaut had stated that the filmmaker is the “flag bearer of nepotism”, thus sowing the seeds for a war of words.

Aamir refused to comment on the situation in particular, but offered his views on nepotism and how he deals with it while working.

Aamir is known for having promoted his brother Faisal and nephew Imran.

Commented Aamir: “It’s normal human nature to try and help people you love and care for. It doesn’t have to be someone from your family. So it’s a very natural emotion. In my work, I strive to not allow that feeling to interfere. I feel that it’s my responsibility as a creative person towards the audience and give them the most importance. I try to not bring in any emotions of that sort in my work.”

Star actress Anushka Sharma, 28, has commented that she has not come across nepotism in her career.

She believes it all comes down to how good one is at his or her work, one’s background notwithstanding.
