Bulgarian backpacker shares knowledge on sculpturing

KOTA KINABALU: Twentyfive-year-old Ventsislav Petrov came to Malaysia with just a single backpack without any proper plans or any local contacts. Now, he is sharing his knowledge on the art of sculpturing with the people of Sabah.

“I came to Sabah two months ago because I was looking for an exotic place that I can explore. Somehow, destiny twisted me here and I am now working with Junior Chamber International Penampang (JCI), where I will be sharing my passion of sculpturing with the locals here,” said Petrov.

Petrov, who hails from Bulgaria, has been practising the art of sculpturing since he was 14 years old.

He studied Theatre and Cinema Design in high school and then went to the National Academy of Arts.

“One day, I was walking along the streets of Kota Kinabalu and I bumped into a random group of people who were playing music. Then, some time later, I met a representative from JCI and now I am working on a project with them,” said Petrov.

Petrov said he could really feel a strong connection with the locals in Sabah and thus he wished to reward them by sharing his knowledge with them.

The said project called ‘Understanding the Human Head' aims to teach aspiring students the most complicated part of the human body, which is the head.

Petrov will be teaching them the basics of sculpturing. He will also be introducing the students the history of sculpturing which will include teachings from the Egyptian, Greek, Roman and modern cultures.

In advising sculpture enthusiasts of Sabah, Petrov said people should just play around with the clay and they would eventually be inspired by it.

“Find a clay and get dirty with it. Clay is the heart of the earth. Once you feel it, you will experience different emotions,” said Petrov.

Petrov also reiterated that nature would teach you the value of patience.

He further explained that if there were people out there who wanted to try out sculpturing, they would just have to refer to examples and it would give them a rough idea.

The project is a collaboration between JCI and Sabah's Pottery Organization. It is a youth event and its target audience are secondary school students.

The event will be held for two weeks. The second week will commence on March 29 and March 30 at Sabah Pottery Studio at Star City Mall, Asia City.

Also present at the event was Beecher Mac Alister, the executive vice president of JCI Penampang.
