Childminde­r charged with intentiona­lly causing death of girl

PETALING JAYA: A childminde­r pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court yesterday to intentiona­lly causing the death of a three-year-old girl who was under her care at an apartment in Sungei Way here on March 14.

The accused, Gloria Erren Liwie, 23, who hails from Sarawak, entered the plea immediatel­y after the charge was read out to her before Judge Mohamad Kamil Nizam.

She is alleged to have committed the offence between 1pm and 4pm at Block A, Pangsapuri Impian Baiduri, Sungei Way. She was charged under Section 304 (a) of the Penal Code which carries maximum jail of 30 years and can be fined, if convicted.

The court set bail at RM15,000 in one surety and ordered her to surrender her passport.

She was also ordered not to disturb witnesses and the victim's family until the case was settled.

The court also ordered her to report herself to the nearest police station once a month and set April 24 for re-mention.

The media had reported that the girl's mother, a cashier who lives in SEA Park, Petaling Jaya found the child unconsciou­s when she went to fetch her at about 4pm that day.

The girl, believed to a victim of child abuse, died while receiving treatment at the Paediatric Emergency Unit, Universiti Malaya Medical Centre here at 5.40pm the same day.

Deputy public prosecutor V. Suloshani appeared for the prosecutio­n while the accused was represente­d by counsel Mohd Yusri Mohd Yusoff. - Bernama
