Man injures himself after killing girlfriend

- By Gary Adit

KUCHING: A shoe shop assistant was stabbed to death by her boyfriend after being accused of having an affair following her apparent refusal to have sex with him early yesterday morning.

The incident came to light around 3.45am when workers at a 24-hour convenience store at Mile 4 were shocked by the sight of a bloodied man entering the premises.

One worker, who only gave his name as Mal, said the injured man claimed he had been attacked and handed him a mobile phone asking him to call for an ambulance.

“He was quite weak and bleeding badly. He handed me his mobile phone, which already had ‘999’ keyed in, and asked for an ambulance because he had been attacked,” said Mal, who made the emergency call without any hesitation.

Medical personnel who arrived at the scene shortly after attended to the injured man, who then revealed to them that his girlfriend was in a nearby rented room on the first floor and had also been injured during the supposed attack.

The revelation prompted medical personnel to hurry to the rented premises, which had been converted into 12 separate rooms for workers at a nearby shopping mall, and managed to locate the man’s girlfriend lying dead on a mattress.

The neat condition of the room belied the man’s claim of an attack taking place in the room and immediately raised the suspicion of medical personnel, who quickly notified arriving police personnel.

Meanwhile, several of the workers staying on the same floor told reporters that they did not hear any commotion coming from the couple’s room, with one even saying he heard the pair laughing together around 2am when he was about to go to sleep.

Padawan district police chief Supt Aidil Bolhassan, who confirmed the incident, told The Borneo Post that a check on the deceased female, whom he identified as 25-year-old Sindam Atom, found two stab wounds on her neck.

“Padawan CID personnel proceeded to head to the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) where the boyfriend, a 25-year-old car accessory salesman, was being treated for his injuries.

“During the questioning, the boyfriend confessed to having killed his girlfriend after she refused his request for sex. This led him to accuse her of having an affair and he went on to grab a knife from the room and stab her,” said Aidil, adding that police also recovered a bloodied knife at the crime scene.

State CID chief Datuk Dev Kumar, meanwhile, revealed that further investigation revealed the suspect had apparently tried to commit suicide following the deadly stabbing of his girlfriend by stabbing himself in the abdomen and neck and also slashing his wrist.

“He may have had a change of heart and rushed to the convenience store nearby to seek assistance. He is currently undergoing treatment at SGH and is under arrest. The case is being investigated as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code,” he said when contacted yesterday.

Yesterday’s murder was the sixth to have been reported in the state so far this year, all of which have been solved by police.
