National track cycling squad targets six golds at 2017 SEA Games

-

KUALA LUMPUR: The national track cycling squad is targeting to collect six out of the 20 gold medals on offer in cycling events at the 2017 SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur from Aug 19-31.

Coach Junaidi Mohd Nasir is confident that his squad can achieve the target through dedicated training.

The cyclists are scheduled to fly to Melbourne today to undergo intensive training with the national elite squad led by Olympic bronze medallist Mohd Azizulhasni Awang.

Junaidi said he expected four gold medals in the men's keirin and team events, and two in the women's sprint events.

"We are doing our final preparations in Melbourne and will return home two weeks prior to the SEA Games and for me, the six-gold medal target set by the National Sports Council is realistic," he said.

Junaidi was speaking to reporters after Malaysian Chef-de-Mission for the 2017 SEA Games, Datuk Marina Chin visited the national cycling squad here, yesterday.

In the meantime, two junior track cyclists Farina Shawati Mohd Adnan and Mohamad Shariz Efendi Mohd Shahrin who will be making their SEA Games debut said they were confident that the squad could achieve the gold medal target. - Bernama
