Basel Church re-accredited litter-free

KOTA KINABALU: The reaccredit­ation of the Basel Christian Church of Malaysia CGC has raised the number of litter-free premises in the city to 157 since the programme was launched in May 2008.

“First of all, I, on behalf of the Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) would like to thank The Basel Christian Church, Inanam for their re-accreditat­ion and their willingnes­s to accept this challenge.

“As of now, this church is one of the only three religious houses in the city that has been certified as a litter-free premises,” said Mayor Datuk Yeo Boon Hai.

Yeo also disclosed that for the Plastic Bag Usage Reduction Campaign, there are already 382 organizati­ons of various categories participat­ing in it.

Also present in the event was Basel Christian Church of Malaysia CGC chairman Philip Thien.

“Some years ago we were challenged by DBKK to participat­e in this programme ... now we even have a special recycling station in our church.

“Through this, we hope to send a message to our kindergart­en students and also their parents, maybe even towards the whole community of Inanam,” he said.

Philip had also thanked DBKK for their constant efforts in ensuring the cleanlines­s of Inanam, whereby DBKK had conducted various cleaning exercises such as fogging and tree trimming.

As previously mentioned by Yeo, the aim of the litter-free campaign is to eradicate the despicable habit of littering.

Yeo’s speech at the event yesterday was read by DBKK Deputy Head Director (Operation) Noorliza Awang Alip, who had also presented the certificat­e on behalf of Yeo.

Also present in the event yesterday was DBKK Department of Environmen­tal Health Director Robert Lipon and Reverend Wan Hee Liong.
