KOTA KINABALU: Sabah’s archers returned with their heads held high after a golden outing at the Universiti Sains Malaysia International Archery Tournament last week.
Sabah Archery Association secretary Paul Leong said the Sabah archers bagged three gold medals at the inaugural tournament which took place from May 17 to 21, in conjunction with the 2nd National Archery Circuit 2017.
The tournament in Kubang Krain, Kelantan gathered some of the country’s top brass including invitees from around the region.
Sabah’s three gold medals have proven that they are very much a rising powerhouse in the country and they all came from Sukma (Malaysia Games) ace Eugenius Lo Foh Soon, who was part of the trio who bagged the gold in the Men’s Team Compound in Kuching last year.
In Kelantan, he won the Qualification, Individual Elimination Round and Team Event.
The compound team also included Wong Co Wan and Adriel Gabriel Liew, and while the odds were stacked against them, they prevailed to deny glory to a senior team opponent.
Second runner up was Nadi Elite, followed by the Malaysian Armed Forces.
Sabah also won silver and bronze medals through Wong Co Wan in the Qualification round and individual elimination round respectively, said Leong.
“I think this result shows that Sabah is still a force to be reckoned with in archery. We had our fair share of glory in Sukma and now we are making a presence in the national circuit,” he said when met here yesterday.
Leong, who is also a state coach, congratulated all the archers for a job well done. He hoped they would continue to improve so that Sabah may keep the pressure on other states who are also on the rise.
“Actually, we have some more very good compound and recurve archers but sadly, they could not compete due to study commitments,” Leong said.
