Bid to smuggle subsidized goods to Indonesia foiled
KENINGAU: The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry (KPDNKK) enforcement branch here recently foiled an attempt to smuggle out subsidized goods to Indonesia by boat at Pagalungan sub-district in Nabawan.
The goods were subsidized packets of edible oil and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
District KPDNKK enforcement head Gunasegaran A/L Krishnan told the Borneo Post yesterday that their success was the result of a tipoff received by district enforcement officers and personnel.
“Through the information obtained, all the controlled items were to be transported by boat through the river to the neighbouring country.
“During the raid, a pile of wrapped up packets of cooking oil and LPG were placed at the edge of the river bank,” he said.
Upon realizing the presence of enforcement officers, some of the smugglers at the scene fled by boat.
Gunasegaran said that all the subsidized goods estimated to be worth about RM15,500, were seized for further investigation.
“The case is being investigated under Section 21 of the Supply Control Act 1961,” he added.
Gunasegaran, who led the operation, urged the public with information of such activities in their area to report to the district KPDNKK by calling 087-338 400/401, or contact him at 016-830 6918 or come to the office here.
