620 to take part in Labuan Chimney Run

-

LABUAN: Six hundred and twenty runners from Labuan, Kota Kinabalu, Brunei, Sarawak and Kuala Lumpur have registered to join the Labuan Chimney Run 2017 on July 8.

The organiser, Absolute Encore, has sponsored ten deaf runners from the Labuan Deaf Association to join the run.

To make this event a success, the Labuan Youth Council is sending at least 20 volunteers to assist during the run.

The main objectives of this run are to promote healthy lifestyle and to boost one of the historic tourism spots in Labuan which is the well-known mystery chimney, located at Tanjung Kubong, Labuan.

The chimney was built in the 80’s with 23,000 pieces of red bricks which were imported all the way from England. With a height of 106 feet, the structure is similar to those of the British and the usage of it, is still a mystery up till today.

This Labuan tourism icon has been awarded the International Green Apple Awards for Environmental Best Practice and Sustainable Development in 2013 in the category of historic building architecture. The international award by The Green Organisation, the United Kingdom enabled Labuan to be selected as The Green Ambassador 2014 for that category.

The Labuan Chimney Run 2017 routes are selected to emphasize the scenic and beautiful nature of Lubuk Temiang, Pohon Batu and Tanjung Aru where runners will experience two running surfaces such as road and hills.

There will be two run categories, the 11km and 21km which are open for men and women, including veterans too. The flag-off will be at 6am for 11km while the 21km run will flag off earlier at 5am.

The 11km offers RM300 cash for the first prize, second prize RM200 and third prize RM100; while the 21km run offers the first prize of RM600 cash, second prize RM400 and third prize RM200.

The Labuan Chimney Run 2017 is also co-organised by the Labuan Sports Kickboxing Association.
