GE earliest in December — veteran politician

-

KOTA KINABALU: The 14th general election could be held in December this year, according to veteran Sabah politician Datuk David Chong.

“That is the earliest it can be held, if not then Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak will go full term to May,” he said.

Chong’s study on the state’s political scenario also showed that the opposition can form the next government if they unite.

In Sabah, the strongest coalition would be between PKR, Warisan Sabah and DAP, he opined, adding that if these three parties combine, they could topple the Barisan Nasional (BN).

“It is my hope that they can work together towards achieving their objective of changing the government and build up the state’s as well as country’s economy,” he stressed and pointed out that Warisan Sabah, though being a new party, can be the one to take on Umno in the Muslim bumiputera constituencies.

Warisan, he added, is also strong in the Kadazandusun Murut and Chinese majority areas.

As for PKR and DAP, they also have very strong support in Sabah and that is why the three parties combined would make a formidable foe for BN, he reiterated.

With the 14th general election looming nearer, Chong urged Sabahans to give much thought to which party they want to form the government and run the country and the state.

He stressed that one of the factors Sabahans must consider when making the decision is the future and that of their children as well as their children.

“Open your eyes and assess the current political scenario then ask yourself, who can help the rakyat and country?” he said.

The rakyat must also differentiate between the parties which really has the interest of the people at heart and those who pop up just to “muddy the waters” and as Chong described it, to make monetary gains.

“The rakyat know that this is happening every time election draws near. There will be parties and individuals who hope to be ‘bought’ as well as those who are paid to split the votes,” he claimed.

These are the factors that must be taken into account before making a decision, he stressed.
