Duo jailed for consuming syabu

KOTA KINABALU: Two youths were jailed for 10 months and ordered to be whipped twice by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday for consuming syabu while still bound with court’s order of supervisio­n under the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK).

Fanny Effendy, 35, and Md Muntansir Ramlie, 28, pleaded guilty before magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun, to separate charges under Section 6 (2) (d) of the Drug Dependants (Treatment and Rehabilita­tion) Act 1983 (Amendment 1998) which is punishable under Section 6 (3) of the same Act.

The indictment provides for a jail term of up to three years or whipping of not more than three times or with both, upon conviction.

The court also ordered the accused to serve their jail terms from the date of their arrest on June 7 this year.

The two accused were apprehende­d on July 18 at AADK Kota Kinabalu for failing to comply with the orders made on July 9, 2015 and June 29, 2016, respective­ly.

In a separate case, a man was fined RM2,500, in default, eight months in jail for receiving a stolen laptop.

Magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus imposed the fine on Mohd Qushairi Kasil, 31, after he admitted to keeping the stolen item at a house in Kampung Pasir Putih, Putatan on August 2.

He was convicted under Section 411 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to five years and a fine, upon conviction.
