Start local, go global with HeriotWatt University

-

WITH five campuses spread across the UK, Dubai and Malaysia, Heriot-Watt University is renowned for its global outlook.

“I was interested in the thrilling adventures and experiences awaiting me at the other side of the globe. I couldn’t wait to be exposed to the diverse cultures and lifestyles abroad,” explained Florence Ong Woei Yng, a BEng (Hons) Chemical Engineering student, who transferred from Heriot-Watt University’s Malaysia campus to its UK campus in Edinburgh under its Go Global inter-campus transfer programme.

Furthermore, the university is ranked in the top 40 among universities in the world for international outlook by The World University Rankings 2016/17, as well as 15th in the UK for its proportion of international students and 21st in the UK for its international faculty by the QS World University Rankings 2017/18.

Go Global, which allows students the flexibility of transferring to any of its campuses for a period of time as long as their programme of study is offered there, further reinforces the university’s commitment in providing students with a truly global education experience.

The programme is open to Heriot-Watt students who have completed their foundation studies and are continuing with their undergraduate studies, as well as its current undergraduate students.

As one of the pioneers of the Go Global programme from Malaysia, Florencewas delighted with the experience she gained studying overseas while also forging new friendships from around the world. “The programme allowed me to receive the best of two worlds; I had the opportunity to experience and compare different lifestyles in a totally different country!” she exclaimed.

According to her, “This is definitely an eye-opening experience. As students, we should take advantage of every opportunity given by the university, which allows us to be independent in the competitive world.”

During her time at the UK campus, Florence attended many networking events organised by the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences (EPS) there.

“Heriot-Watt University is one step ahead, teaching the same syllabus across its campuses seamlessly without issues on incompatible courses or insufficient credit transfers. Uniquely, it is one of only a handful of foreign branch campuses in Malaysia that offer exchange and transfer programmes.”

Upon her graduation at the UK campus, Florence stayed on to work at Glasgow, Scotland.

“Studying abroad teaches one to be independent, and have self-discipline and perseverance. It will push you beyond your comfort zone but you will definitely be amazed by what you achieve at the end of the day. The experience will truly be life-changing. Thus, becoming a global student is by far the best decision I have made,” she said.
