KOTA KINABALU: Sailing activities have the potential to attract more young enthusiasts in the country and in particular Sabah.

Kinabalu Yacht Club (KYC) bosun Omar Bakri said this after 80 of the sailors that took part at the recent Merdeka Day Regatta Day in Tanjung Aru near here were all aged 15 and below.

“We have the optimist event which is for those who are under 15 years old as one way to attract students to pick up the sport.

“We hope that through the next City Day Regatta in February 2018, there will be even more entries from among the younger generation.

“We expect around 120 participants from within and outside of the country for the event,” Omar was quoted as saying in a statement issued by the State Information Department yesterday.

Omar went on to say that other categories to be contested include the 470, Open Surfboard and Optimist while introducing the RS:X event.

“Registration will open in December and hopefully we will get more entries,” he added.

Apart from the City Day Regatta, KYC will also be staging the Harvest Festival and Merdeka Day regattas in May and August next year.

Omar was among the KYC delegation headed by commodore Albert Shim paying a courtesy call on Head of State Tun Juhar Mahiruddin at the Istana here.

The purpose of the meeting was to introduce the KYC new office bearers for the 2017-2018 term as well as to brief Tun Juhar on the club’s activities.
