Jolin Tsai’s song ‘Play’ banned for vulgarity
BEIJING: Taiwanese singer Jolin Tsai’s hit song Play has been banned for vulgarity.
The ban came after an inspection by the Shanghai Culture and Television Film and Television Administration Bureau.
In official documents, the bureau claimed that the lyrics were obscene.
For this reason, for her concert in Shanghai next month, they have banned her from performing the song.
The ban left many fans infuriated because Play was to be the opening song for the concert. This was also one of the awardwinning singer’s popular songs and the sudden cancellation has left many fans protesting that this is an “old song” and there were “other songs with worse lyrics” that have been performed.
Jolin’s manager Wang Yu Liang was unclear about the situation and noted that Jolin had previously performed this song on her tours in other cities. Furthermore, the album received approval in China itself where physical copies were even being sold.
The album Play has won nine Golden Melody awards and the music video title track, Play was the most-viewed Chinese music video of 2014 on YouTube.
The album also won Jolin an MTV Europe Music Award nomination for Best Taiwanese Act and an Mnet Asian Music Award for Best Asian Artist.
Jolin is also known for her showmanship, and has been known to perform on stage wearing racy outfits.
