Riot assures Christians of their rights under BN govt

KUCHING: Sarawak’s Christianmajority population has been assured they will continue to enjoy the right to their religion under the Barisan Nasional government.

Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Richard Riot said BN had been steadfast in its politics of power sharing.

He said as long as the power sharing concept is in place by BN as a grouping of political parties comprising all races in Malaysia, the future of Christian-majority Sarawak is assured.

He was speaking at the St Anne’s Church annual dinner in Siburan on Saturday.

It was attended by about 800 diners.

Reiterating that BN was sensitive to Christians in Sarawak, Riot said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had shown that Christians would continue to have their rightful place in multiracial and multi-religious Malaysia when he visited St Anne Church last year bearing a gift of RM2 million grant for the church’s building project.

“My advice to fellow Christians is, come the 14th General Election, vote Datuk Seri Najib and his BN government and the future of the Christians is assured,” Riot said.

Riot also welcomed a plan by the Catholic mission to set a technical vocational skills college to complement the government’s effort in producing skilled human resources highly sought by industries.

He assured that he would take special interest in ensuring that the Catholic mission successfully set the proposed skills training centre.
