TAWAU: Employers in the public and private sector are strongly urged to allow their employees time off to train with the Territorial Army as this would prepare them to serve the country in the event national peace and sovereignty is threatened.

Commanding officer of the 516th regiment of the Territorial Army for Sabah east coast, Honorary Brigadier General Tan Sri Datuk Liew Yun Fah, said that many members of the Territorial Army could not obtain leave from their employers, including the government agencies, to take part in the training.

Liew said he was disappointed that there are employers who do not allow their employees to take part in the Territorial Army training. As a businessman himself, he said it would be an honour for a company if there are employees involved in the Territorial Army activities.

He said this at a press conference after officiating the closing parade of the 516th regiment Territorial Army 15-day annual training camp attended by 379 participants at Kukusan Camp here yesterday.

“Sabah faces security challenges from within and the neighboring countries, hence, we should play a concerted role to ensure our children undergo proper military training. The more people we have in the Territorial Army, the better prepared we are to take care of our country,” he said.

Liew warned members of the Territorial Army not to be involved in drug abuse as this would not only ruin their future, but also destroy the country’s image.

He also called on the members to encourage more people to join the Territorial Army and serve the country.
