KOTA KINABALU: Two men claimed trial at the Sessions Court here yesterday to committing an armed gangrobbery at a convenience shop.

Abirusdi Atilah, 25, and Adiprima Arcules, 27, who were brought before judge Azreena Aziz, were jointly charged under Section 395 of the Penal Code.

The charge carries a maximum jail term of 20 years and whipping, upon conviction.

Abirusdi and Adiprima were alleged to have robbed the shop staff of RM116.70 and 74 packs of cigarette armed with a machete and a knife at 7-Eleven in Manggatal Plaza here at 3.40am on August 28.

Deputy public prosecutor Husna Abdul Halim told the court that the case involved the use of sharp weapons and thus the offence is a serious one.

She also said that Abirusdi was also charged with illegal entry in the state and the offence was non-bailable.

Therefore, she objected to bail being given to both the accused persons.

Meanwhile, Adiprima prayed for bail to be allowed while Abirusdi said nothing regarding the bail application. Both accused were not represented.

The prosecution will be calling nine witnesses to testify against the accused persons.

The court fixed January 9, 10 and 26 this year for trial and released the Adiprima on RM10,000 bail with two local sureties while Abirusdi would be further detained in custody, pending disposal of the case.
