Syabu lands mother in jail

KOTA KINABALU: A 50-yearold mother was given a 10-month jail sentence for possessing 0.02 grams of syabu by the Magistrate's Court here yesterday.

Magistrate Stephanie Sherrin Abbie imposed the sentence on Nursia Jungay after she pleaded guilty as charged under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

The indictment carries a maximum fine of RM100,000 or a jail term of up to five years or to both, upon conviction.

She was caught in possession of the drugs by a roadside at Jalan Towering in Penampang at 7.30 pm on July 17.

Nursia, represente­d by counsel Farazwin Haxdy, pleaded for a lenient fine, stating that she is a housewife and has a son aged 17 under her care and that that she has no previous criminal record after she was detained since July 17.

The court also ordered Nursia to be referred to the Immigratio­n Department after serving her sentence.

In a separate case, another woman and two men were sentenced to 12 months jail by the same court for possessing and consuming syabu.

Zainab Hussin, Buhari Mohd Salleh, and Sonny Sidin, who appeared before the magistrate, admitted to the charges framed under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 when it was read out to them.

Zainab was found in possession of 0.16 grams of syabu by a roadside at Kampung Gentisan, Putatan on May 15. Buhari and Sonny, who were arrested in Penampang and here recently were found to have tested positive of the drugs when their urine samples were taken.

The offence, framed under Section 15 (1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, carries a maximum fine of RM5,000 or a jail term of up to two years, upon conviction.

The magistrate also ordered Zainab and Buhari to be referred to the Immigratio­n Department while Sonny is to be placed under police supervisio­n for two years.

Meanwhile, in another court, three men were sentenced to jail terms of between six and 11 months, while another man was fined RM2,600, in default, eight months jail for possessing syabu.

Magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus imposed the sentences on David Moinil, 25, Junaidi Jimlani, 26, Fazly Rosli, 30, and Stephanus Yohanes, 23, after they pleaded guilty as charged under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

They were arrested for possession of syabu of between 0.04 grams and 0.81 grams at Kampung Babagon in Penampang, Kampung Sembulan Lama here, Penampang Baru and Bundusan, Penampang between July 7, 2016, and June 5, 2017.

Junaidi was also jailed for six months for consuming syabu while another man, Ajirin Rasin, 38, was fined for committing a similar offence.
