“THIS degree has, without doubt, helped me to better understand my future profession. I had learnt so much through the lectures conducted and this has been helping me to obtain better career perspectives that are relatable to the real world,” said Melvin Hong Mao Bin, an MA (Hons) Accounting and Business Finance undergraduate at the Heriot-Watt University Malaysia.

His fellow course mate, Sarah Hannah Binti Sharil Muha, who is part of the pioneer batch of students in the Accounting and Business Finance programme, agrees.

“We are exposed to relevant topics with regards to the programme, enabling us to obtain greater insights into the career pathways and the standards that we need to build!” she exclaimed.

Offered by the School of Social Sciences, the MA (Hons) Accounting and Business Finance programme is a specialist degree that has been accredited by four international professional bodies, namely theAssociation of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and Certified Practising Accountants (CPA) Australia.

As such, graduates are eligible to apply for exemptions for up to nine papers from these international bodies.

According to Sarah, Heriot-Watt offers the maximum exemptions for professional accounting papers.

“Not only does the university offer specialised degrees, it has created a conducive environment for students to develop academic and social skills,” she added.

What’s more, the Malaysia campus will be introducing the ACCA Accelerate Programme in October 2017. The programme offers significant benefits. Among others, students get to speed up their journey towards becoming an ACCA member, a chartered certified finance professional, by taking five professional papers at the start of their third year.

Since its establishment in Scotland in the 1800s, Heriot-Watt University has achieved an international outlook with campuses in the UK, Dubai and Malaysia.

Just recently, the university was ranked first in Scotland for Accounting and Finance, Building and Town and Country Planning, Economics, and Chemical Engineering, and in the top 10 in the UK for Accounting and Finance, and Business Management and Marketing by the Guardian University Guide 2018.

The university’s solid reputation as one of the top UK universities is what enticed Melvin.

He further explained, “Located in Precinct 5, Putrajaya, HeriotWatt University Malaysia provides a conducive environment for students. You are away from the hustle and bustle of city life and get to truly enjoy life as a university student without many distractions.”

Additionally, Heriot-Watt is also active at organising career fairs and talks for their students.

Both Melvin and Sarah are especially thankful for this and fortunate to have benefitted from the invaluable insights and advice given by industry professionals.

“It is such an added advantage to be able to study at Heriot-Watt. This degree has been preparing us well to kick-start a promising career in the future,” they concluded.
