Petronas StreetSmart programme spreads road safety awareness to students

-

LABUAN: Petronas Dagangan Berhad (PDB) yesterday organised the Petronas StreetSmart programme at Sekolah Kebangsaan Bebuloh to reinforce road safety messages amongst 120 school children, aged between 10 to 12.

In collaboration with Petronas, science education, hands-on activities and workshop to faciliate students' understanding on the importance of adhering to road safety rules were held.

Petronas StreetSmart is one of PDB's corporate social responsibility programmes, aimed at sharing, educating and spreading the awareness on the importance of staying vigilant and safe on the road to primary and secondary school students. The initiative mirrors the government's effort to produce a generation of safe and responsible road users.

Today's programme also saw the participation of about 30 members of the Harley Owners Group (HOG) as part of their Borneo International HOG Rally Malaysia 2017, of which PDB was the official fuel partner.

Speaking about the initiative, PDB managing director and chief Dato' Mohd Ibrahimuddin Mohd Yunus said, “At PDB, road safety is of utmost concern for us given that we are in the business of fueling our customers' everyday journey. The Petronas StreetSmart is our grass-root programme to embed a safety-first mindset amongst the young ones and mould these future drivers to be responsible when on the road.”

To further driver home safety messages, the students' understanding of safety was put to test through the Car Drop Challenge, which required them to build a car model complete with safety features.

The principal of SK Bebuloh, Hajjah Dayang Saidah Hj Mohd Yassin commented, “Our top priority is the safety of our students. While we have been constantly remainding our students to be vigilant, Petronas StreetSmart managed to effectively drive home these important road safety messages, especially when our students get hand-on experience and learn safety tips in a fun and interactive way.”

Thus far Petronas StreetSmart has benefitted close to 5,000 students from over 50 schools across the nation.

Concurrent to the Petronas StreetSmart programme, PDB also carried out the Water For Life programme at Kampung Bebuloh, where over 1,000 residents are currently facing interruption of water supply.

About 100 volunteers from PDB, Malaysian Nature Society and HOG members were on hand to install two 1,000-gallon water tanks equipped with filteration system to allow the local community access to clean water tanks.
