50 emergency calls as strong winds wreak havoc

KOTA KINABALU: The State Fire and Rescue Services Department operations centre has received over 50 emergency calls since Monday in the wave of strong winds and heavy rains occurring in various parts of the State.

Head of the operations centre chief Khatizah Rahaban said 33 of the calls received on Monday were over fallen trees, flash floods and road accidents in the interior areas, west coast and in Labuan.

“Twenty-six calls were reports of fallen trees, while the rest were on minor road accidents and flash floods.

“Today, we have received 14 calls over fallen trees around Kota Kinabalu and flash flood in Kota Belud,” she said yesterday.

Khatizah said several houses in Kampung Donggoi and Kampung Marajah were badly affected by the flood and an evacuation operation was immediatel­y launched to relocate the affected victims to temporary shelters.

Meanwhile, a section of the roof at the Royal Malaysian Customs office at Jesselton Point collapsed as a result of strong winds and heavy rain yesterday afternoon.

A spokespers­on said the incident happened around 2 pm which damaged the ceiling and roof in the Customs investigat­ion and operations room.

Customs officers and personnel managed to save important documents.
