Muaythai exponents shine in Bintulu

Sabah athletes turned on the style with outstandin­g results from the Borneo Cup Pro Muaythai Tournament in Bintulu, Sarawak over the weekend.

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah athletes turned on the style with outstandin­g results from the Borneo Cup Pro Muaythai Tournament in Bintulu, Sarawak over the weekend.

The seven-member state squad from the elite group, Malaysia Games (Sukma) project team and juniors did well to bag three gold, one silver and three bronze medals.

Shah Aryan Shahzam, who is under the Sukma Project squad, delivered the gold in the boys'44kg while state junior athlete Nurfaiz Iskandar Daud won his gold from the boys' 38-40kg category.

Elite athlete Nur Naznerah Jailuddin competed in the women's 45kg and she did not disappoint by winning the gold.

The silver medal was from the state women's elite athlete Nur Sofie Baizurien Beddu in the 60kg category.

As for the bronzes, the winners were Sukma trainee Alexis Akan from the 63kg category as well as Mohd Rizal in the four-cornered 68kg contest and Mohd Izarul in the 63kg elite bout.

Sabah Muaythai Associatio­n (PMN Sabah) president,Hj. Nazri Hj. Ab Razak was satisfied with the results as he praised the state athletes for their performanc­e.

He said the tournament exposure in Bintulu was part of PMN Sabah's first programme phaseto ensure the state athletes will receive continuous training as well as to maintain their good momentum.

"We will continue to send our athletes as part of their developmen­t process," he said in a statement yesterday.

The next outing for the state athletes will be at the Sabah Junior Muaythai Championsh­ip at Sabah Muaythai Camp in Papar from October 24-26.

One of the state elite exponents, Mohamad Shah Ahmad too will be taking part in the Johor Muaythai Open Series IV where he will be challengin­g for the Johor Menteri Besar Belt on October 28.

PMN Sabah will also take part in the Malaysia Muaythai Associatio­n (PMM)-organised 2nd National Muay Inter-Club Championsh­ip in Peninsular Malaysia from November 30 to December 3.
