Environmentalist claims drains being filled with earth
KOTA KINABALU: Environmentalist Dr CY Vun has questioned why the authorities allowed contractors to fill up monsoon drains with earth.
He said such sights of contractors filling and clogging drains with earth were readily seen next to Bornion commercial shops as well as at Foh Sang, Luyang.
“Do the authorities and consultants allow these contractors to fill up the drains with earth?” he asked.
He reminded that heavy flash floods will occur at the affected areas as a result of such activities that were allowed to continue without action.
He urged City Hall and the Environment Protection Department to issue stop work orders to those carrying out the projects as the contractors and consultants have violated the by-laws.
He warned that any incident of flash flooding may result in losses due to damaged properties.
Meanwhile, Department of Irrigation and Drainage director Yahiya Awang Kahar said the department was aware of the works being done and assured that it was done for working space.
“Our contractor’s excavator is on standby 24 hours in case of heavy rain. We are upgrading to L shape drain since the existing drain is damaged and ugly,” he said.
The complaint has also been forwarded to City Hall.
