Winnie Ng aims to play at highest level

KUALA LUMPUR: Amateur golfer Winnie Ng aims to play at the highest level after her success in the 2017 Malaysian Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) tournament held at TPC Kuala Lumpur, Bukit Kiara, which ended yesterday.

Winnie, 16, who concluded her game in the 64th spot after scoring a nine-over-par 293 to emerge as the best Malaysian in the US$1.8 million (about RM7.6 million) tournament, said her ultimate goal was the Olympics.

“Ever since I took up golf at seven years old, I wanted to participate in the Olympics and 2020 games. I like to win an overseas amateur tournament in one or two years.”

Speaking about the fourday tournament, Winnie said many things have changed in terms of her style of play compared to her last which saw her making a debut.

“Last year my mistake was playing their game plan. So this year I learned to play my own game plan and hit the ball to the middle of the green. It was really great to have such a good opportunity to play in this event and meeting all the top players,” she added.

Meanwhile, Malaysia’s top female golfer, Kelly Tan admitted that she has learned a lot from the tournament following her poor scoring of a 17-over-par 301 to share the 70th spot with compatriot, Aretha Pan.

“I definitely learned a lot from day one. I kind of rushed things a little bit. Everything went fast forward somehow.

“I realised that in the middle of my game, but I couldn’t stop myself for some reason. I think that is something that I have to learn... to slow down. It’s the same shot but you still have to go through the whole process,” she said.

The other Malaysians in the field, Nur Durriyah Damian who won the bronze in the women’s golf team in the 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games (KL2017) also could not put on a better show.
