Bus driver charged with reckless driving

KOTA KINABALU: A 51-yearold bus driver was charged at the Traffic Court here with reckless driving which resulted in the death of a youth last year.

Yusuf Abai who was brought before magistrate Afiq Agoes, pleaded not guilty to the charge framed under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

The charge provides for a jail term of not less than two years and not more than three years and fine between RM5,000 to RM10,000, upon conviction.

Yusuf was accused of driving his vehicle in a reckless manner at a U-turn at Jalan Lintas at 7.30pm on June 26, 2016 and resulted in the death of one Yusri Ag Yusof, 32.

The court released the unrepresen­ted accused on RM750 bail with two local sureties, pending disposal of his trial.

Meanwhile, three men were fined by the same court for separate charges of driving their vehicles while under the influence of alcohol.

Junaidy Hamid was fined RM1,400 while Chai Ting Woon, and Celestin Joikin were fined RM1,200 each.

The court also ordered the three accused, aged 40, 36 and 50, respective­ly, to be jailed for six months if they failed to pay their fines.

All of them were convicted under Section 45A (1) of the same Act which carries a fine of up to RM6,000 or a maximum jail of 12 months, upon conviction.

Traffic prosecutin­g officer Inspector Hanif Mamyudi told the court that Junaidy and Celestin had admitted to committing their offences at Jalan KK-Penampang and Chai was apprehende­d at Jalan Bundusan, in front of a hotel in Penampang on June 15.
