China’s Consul-General to promote trade
KOTA KINABALU: Newlyappointed China’s ConsulGeneral to Sabah Liang Caide said promoting trade and economic ties, including the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), would be his priority during his tenure here.
“The initiative has been promoted aggressively and Malaysia was among the first to respond to it.
“We consider Sabah as a very important stop in this initiative and hope more (Chinese) companies would be interested to invest here.
“This is because Sabah has a unique advantage -- a strategic location, as well as human and cultural resources. It has a lot of potentials in opening up trade and economy,” he said during a courtesy call from the Sabah Journalists Association committee led by Mugunthan Vanar yesterday.
Liang took over from China’s first Consul-General to Sabah Chen Peijie, who recently returned to Beijing after a stint since January 2015.
Chinese companies are involved Sabah’s railway and construction projects, including The Shore, a commercial development in the city centre, Liang said.
He said there was more room for cooperation in the construction and manufacturing sectors, especially in major projects like the Sipitang Oil and Gas Terminal and the tourism sector.
Liang said the consulate could enlighten the local media on the latest economic development in China through forum, training and briefings. - Bernama
